Can Teacher Residencies Help With Shortages?

"There are two ways to prevent a teacher shortage in American schools: Widen the pipeline into the profession, or plug the leaky bucket of young teachers leaving the field.”

When Education Week shared this article two weeks ago, titled "Can Teacher Residencies Help With Shortage," we could not agree more with that leading quote into their story.

Also pulled from the article, we believe the following quotes are additionally relevant to the discussion of understanding EdForce.

1. "...often in "teaching schools," that modeled best practices for educating students with diverse needs and backgrounds. That means they received up to 900 hours of experience, 10 times as much as in a typical alternative-certification program and about 300 hours more than traditional teacher-preparation programs...”

2. “In some ways, [traditional teacher preparation] might have sanitized things too much, in terms of separating knowledge from the experiences that are a part of life for students and members in a community."

Much of the information from this article aligns with PCG Education's staffing solution, EdForce.  The EdForce service provides guidance and advice on gaining alternative teaching certification for those who want to teach in the school setting, but come form a non-traditional background or other career path.  It is designed to create a pathway for qualified talent or a district's existing professionals to achieve state teaching certification outside of the traditional pathway.  It also helps close the diversity gap between minority students and teachers.  EdForce is a very unique, flexible service.  Over 6 hours of high quality, online interactive courses in areas like classroom management, curriculum and instruction are provided. In addition, EdForce provides an interactive online community that allows adjuncts across the nation to connect, share experiences, and provide support.
